ACNE TreatmentS in Singapore
Assessment Before Treatment
Acne treatment depends on how the condition is presenting, its severity, the patient’s skin, previous treatment and other clinically relevant factors. Different patients may therefore require different approaches to management.

At The Acne Clinic, treatment begins with clinical assessment before appropriate management options are discussed. Depending on individual needs, management may include medical treatment, selected procedures, skin care guidance or a combination of approaches.
HOW ACNE TREATMENT IS DECIDED
Treatment Starts With Understanding the Acne
Before management options are discussed, clinical assessment helps establish how the acne is presenting and what factors may be relevant to treatment decisions.

01
Current Presentation
The types of acne lesions present, the areas affected and the apparent severity of the condition may be considered.
02
Acne History
The consultation may include when the acne began, how it has changed, recurring patterns and previous treatments or skin care.
03
Individual Factors
Other clinically relevant factors may be considered where they could influence treatment selection or the way the condition is presenting.
04
Management Discussion
Following assessment, appropriate management options can be discussed according to the patient’s clinical needs.

Clinical Insight from Dr Ramita
What factors influence how you decide which acne management approach to discuss with a patient?
The approach to acne management depends on the type, severity and extent of the breakouts, including whether there are inflamed lesions, deeper nodules or signs of scarring. Patients may describe their acne similarly, but their skin conditions can differ significantly, which influences the options discussed.

I also consider the patient's medical history, previous treatments, skin response and breakout patterns. Their lifestyle and ability to follow a treatment plan are equally important. The goal is to recommend a suitable, practical approach based on each patient's individual needs.

Medical Management of Acne
01
Treatment According to Clinical Need
Medical treatment may be considered depending on the type and severity of acne, previous treatment and other relevant clinical factors.
02
Topical Treatment
Topical medications may be considered for some patients as part of acne management. The treatment selected depends on the clinical presentation and individual needs.
03
Oral Medication
Oral medication may be considered where clinically appropriate. Whether medication is suitable depends on the patient’s acne and other relevant clinical considerations.
04
Treatment Review
Response to treatment may be reviewed over time and the management approach adjusted where clinically appropriate.
Procedural Treatment for Acne
When Procedures May Be Considered
Selected in clinic procedures may form part of acne management for some patients where clinically appropriate. The role of a procedure depends on the acne presentation, treatment objective, the patient’s skin and findings from clinical assessment.

Clinical Insight from Dr Ramita
When might a procedure be considered as part of acne management rather than medical treatment alone?
An in-clinic procedure may be considered when medication alone cannot address a specific skin concern, such as persistent clogged pores, uneven texture or established acne scars. While medical treatments help manage oil production, blocked follicles and inflammation, certain procedures may complement treatment by addressing existing skin changes.

However, controlling active inflammation and irritation remains the priority before considering any procedure. I assess the patient's skin condition, whether it can tolerate the procedure and what additional benefit the procedure may offer. If there is no clear need, medical treatment alone may be the more appropriate approach.
Does Acne Treatment Differ by Acne Type?
Different acne presentations may involve different clinical considerations. Treatment is not selected from the name of the condition alone and should take into account the individual patient and clinical assessment.
Acne Scarring and Acne Scar Treatment
Acne can sometimes leave persistent marks or scarring. Where scarring is present, the type and extent of the changes may need to be assessed separately from active acne before treatment options are discussed.

Acne Scar Treatment
Different types of acne scarring may require different treatment considerations. The appropriate approach depends on the characteristics of the scarring, the condition of the skin and individual clinical assessment.
The dedicated Acne Scar Treatment section provides further information about treatment approaches including TCA CROSS, subcision and fractional laser resurfacing.
